When the Guns Fall Silent
To commemorate the 100 year anniversary of the First World War, Pompey in the Community teamed up with Oxford University Press and author Jim Riordan to produce a football themed inspired project.
When The Guns Fall Silent tells the amazing story of when the fighting gave way to football on the frozen ground of No-Mans Land. This heart felt story uses true facts from the First World War and transports readers back to the war fields of France and show that even in times of conflict and extreme sadness, there is always hope.
The project consists of a two hour workshop, with one hour being spent in the classroom using unique resources developed by the education team at Pompey in the Community. The second hour consists of a practical session and the pupils will have the opportunity to re-enact the famous Christmas Day football match on No Man’s Land.
Children take part in a one hour long classroom session that educates them about the war using snippets taken from the book and then take part in a second hour of practical activity and games that soldiers would have taken part in 100 years ago.
The sessions are available to schools in the Primary and Secondary sector. For more information or to book please contact firstname.lastname@example.org or call 02392 728899.
