Premier League For Sport
Pompey in the Community has been part of the Premier League 4 Sport programme since its inception in 2009.
The innovative Premier League 4 Sport (PL4S) project continues to grow from strength to strength. This year alone 26,432 young people engaged in sport through the project (country wide). Delivered by the Premier League and Sport England, PL4S sees Premier League clubs acting as a hub linked to community sports facilities/clubs, which in turn are linked to local secondary schools to create satellite sports clubs.
The project is aimed to engage with young people from the age of 13-26 years old (particularly the 14+ age group) Every club is run by qualified NGB sport coaches in their chosen sport and are structured to give children of various abilities the chance to improve their skills, learn a new sport and have fun participating with others outside of school hours.
There are also opportunities to progress to play at hub clubs run by the coaches involved, chances to compete in regional and national tournaments in selected sports and termly Pompey FC prizes to be won for outstanding attendance or performance.
Project is coordinated by:
The sports currently set-up on the programme include Athletics, badminton, basketball, boxing, hockey, table tennis, tennis and volleyball. All the sessions have a set weekly venue based at a location in or just outside the city of Portsmouth to make it accessible for a large number of young people to attend.
A Kick Start Health course lasts for five weeks, with sessions lasting two hours. This consists of a combination of classroom based learning, followed by a physical activity session, usually linked to the classroom work. The project is funded by the Football League Trust and will continue for 3 years. Fruit and vegetables used in the first session’s ‘blind-tasting’ section have been kindly donated by Sainsbury’s Farlington.
We also offer the opportunity for participants and coaches to further their skills and knowledge by putting them on courses. This year alone at Pompey in the Community over 150 qualifications were gained through the PL4S programme!
