After-School Clubs

At Pompey in the Community, we are committed to providing an enriching and enjoyable football experience for every child who participates in our extracurricular football clubs. Our primary goal is to broaden their football experience while ensuring they have fun throughout their journey.

Approach

Children attending our clubs will be able to develop their skills and knowledge of football through engaging activities. Our sessions focus on a combination of development drills and fun games designed to enhance technique and foster a love for the game.

Activities

Participants will engage in various drills tailored to their age and skill level, allowing them to learn fundamental techniques and improve their overall game understanding. Additionally, our sessions incorporate interactive games that promote teamwork, communication, and enjoyment.

Match Finale

To conclude each session on a high note, all children will have the chance to put their newfound skills into practice during friendly matches. These matches provide a valuable opportunity for players to apply what they have learned in a game-like setting and experience the excitement of playing football with their peers.

Join Us

Join us at Pompey in the Community and embark on a football journey filled with learning, growth, and, most importantly, fun! Whether your child is a beginner or an experienced player, our clubs offer a welcoming and supportive environment.

Portsmouth Men and Women’s Walking Football

Pompey ITC Walking Football started in June 2014 with the aid of a 1 year grant to promote health initiatives among older people in Portsmouth and was led by 2 of the then Community Coaches Paul Allen and Mike Pink. This was based initially at Charles Dickens Centre and in 2015 the ROKO astro pitches.

In early Summer 2015 the members had to make a decision to continue the club when the grant ran out. A committee was formed to run the club ensuring we met the required costs through subs and keeping the Community coaches.

In March 2016 we obtained an Awards for All Grant from the National Lottery Fund and that really helped us build up to around 30 regular members and be financially secure.

Our base remained at Roko until the pandemic lockdowns, which led to Roko not opening through the day-time before eventually closing completely. Sadly, lockdown also meant the loss of our Community coaches.

From Summer 2020, we have played at the Goals Centre on Tangier Road where we meet on Mondays and Thursdays from 11am-12 noon (and hopefully the John Jenkins Centre in the near future).

Our membership has grown to around 60 with around 30+ attending each session.
Through the hour, we play a number of round-robin small-sided games (5,6,7 a side), 3 touch football, below crossbar height, restricted penalty areas.

The age range of our group is currently from 50 to 83, with the vast majority in their mid 60s and 70s. That’s a wide age range, we have sufficient numbers for the 70s to play as a separate group which they appreciate.

We are an active group and have held a range of social activities – we have our own in-house band “The Last Resort” who host regular social evenings where they play. Other social events have included Golf days, Football Golf, Quiz, Barn Dance, Skittles evenings and friendly matches against other clubs both local and much further afield.

We play in a range of tournaments (including annual trips to tournaments in Spain/Portugal) and even though our trophy cabinet in the Community Centre is overflowing with trophies we do have varying degrees of success (that’s Cup Football for you – even at this level).

Our most notable successes have occurred at national/international levels:

  • WFA National 70s Cup in 2018 (runners-up in 2019; national finalists in 2023)
  • Mallorca International Tournament winners 2019
  • Stephen Darby Tournament Winners 2021 (over 120 teams from throughout the Premier and EFL Leagues).
  • Vilamoura International Tournament (56 teams) Runners-Up 2022

It’s a very supportive group and the benefits of Walking Football are immense – improving health, fitness, social and mental health well-being. New members are always welcome.
