Pompey in the Community (PiTC) and the Saints Foundation have been working together to demonstrate unity and cooperation between the two organisations to deliver an important message to young people across the region.

As part of this collaboration, participants from PiTC’s Premier League Kicks programme have been taking part in a series of educational workshops focused on violence in football and the serious consequences that can arise from negative behaviour. The sessions encouraged open discussion, reflection, and learning, helping young people to understand the impact that violence can have not only on individuals, but also on themselves, their club, community and family.

The workshops also provided an opportunity for participants to explore the history of the rivalry between Portsmouth and Southampton, gaining a deeper understanding of how the derby developed and why it holds such significance for supporters of both clubs. By learning about the origins of the rivalry, young people were encouraged to appreciate football’s heritage while recognising the importance of respect, responsibility, and positive fan behaviour.

Clare Martin, CEO of Pompey in the community said:

“This project shows the power of football to bring people together. By working with the Saints Foundation, we’re proving that rivalry doesn’t have to mean division. Through education and open discussion, we’re helping young people understand the derby’s history while promoting respect, responsibility, and positive behaviour.”

Both organisations are committed to using football as a force for good, supporting young people to make positive choices and become role models within their communities. The partnership sends a strong message that, regardless of club loyalties, everyone has a role to play in creating a safer and more inclusive football culture.

Amanda Martin, MP Portsmouth North, said

“As someone who represents Portsmouth North in Parliament and stands in the Fratton End like so many others I know how deep the passion runs for Pompey. But this initiative shows football at its very best fierce rivalry on the pitch, respect and responsibility off it. By Pompey in the Community and the Saints Foundation working together we’re able to send a clear message to young people that supporting your club should never come at the cost of safety, decency or pride in your community. That’s something everyone across our region can be proud of.”

Through initiatives like this, Pompey in the Community and the Saints Foundation continue to demonstrate that football can bring people together and  inspire change.
