About Pompey in the Community
Pompey in the Community (PitC) is Portsmouth’s leading health and wellbeing charity. We deliver inspiring sports, physical activity, education, and health programmes across Portsmouth and surrounding areas – supporting people of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities.
As the affiliated charity of Portsmouth Football Club, we have a long history of delivering football and community programmes. We reach over 36,000 people annually, making a real difference in our community.
PitC is both a registered charity and company. We are governed by a Board of Trustees, who meet at least six times a year, with sub-committee work in addition. Trustees are legally and financially responsible for the charity’s governance and strategy, while day-to-day management is delegated to our Chief Executive, Clare Martin, and the Senior Leadership Team.

As a trustee, you will play a key role in shaping PitC’s strategy, ensuring strong governance, and helping us grow our impact. We are specifically seeking trustees with skills and experience in:
- Legal
- Human Resources (HR)
- Health & Safety
- Education
- Information Technology (IT)
While appointments are made on merit, we warmly welcome applications from candidates who are currently under-represented on our Board and across the wider charity sector.
General Trustee Responsibilities
All trustees share collective responsibility for:
- Ensuring PitC delivers its charitable purpose and strategic objectives.
- Upholding governance standards as set out by the Charity Commission (The Essential Trustee).
- Ensuring the charity complies with legal, financial, and safeguarding requirements.
- Acting with integrity, accountability, and in the best interests of beneficiaries.
- Attending Board meetings (minimum six per year) and contributing fully to discussions and decisions.
Specific Trustee Roles
- Trustee with Responsibility for Legal
Essential:
- Qualified legal professional or strong legal background.
- Knowledge of charity law, employment law, contracts, and governance.
- Ability to provide clear advice on legal matters to the Board.
Desirable:
- Experience of risk management and compliance within the charity sector.
Key Duties:
- Support the Board in meeting legal obligations.
- Advise on contracts, partnerships, and governance documents.
- Ensure policies and practices align with legislation and regulation.
- Trustee with Responsibility for Human Resources (HR)
Essential:
- Professional experience in HR or people management.
- Knowledge of employment law, staff development, and organisational culture.
Desirable:
- Experience in workforce planning or volunteer management.
Key Duties:
- Advise on HR strategy, policies, and procedures.
- Support development of staff and volunteer wellbeing initiatives.
- Ensure best practice in recruitment, training, and retention.
- Trustee with Responsibility for Health & Safety
Essential:
- Experience in health and safety compliance or risk management.
- Knowledge of relevant health and safety legislation and standards.
Desirable:
- Experience in safeguarding or risk management within the charity or education sectors.
Key Duties:
- Provide oversight of PitC’s health and safety policies and compliance.
- Monitor and advise on risk management across all programmes.
- Support staff in embedding a culture of safety and safeguarding.
- Trustee with Responsibility for Education
Essential:
- Experience within the education sector (schools, further/higher education, or training).
- Knowledge of curriculum development, teaching practice, or educational governance.
Desirable:
- Experience of partnerships between education and community organisations.
Key Duties:
- Support development of PitC’s education programmes.
- Advise on partnerships with schools, colleges, and universities.
- Ensure educational activities remain relevant, impactful, and inclusive.
- Trustee with Responsibility for IT
Essential:
- Professional IT expertise, particularly in systems, infrastructure, or digital transformation.
- Knowledge of data protection, cyber security, and digital best practice.
Desirable:
- Experience of IT in the charity or education sectors.
Key Duties:
- Provide oversight of IT systems and digital strategy.
- Support innovation and digital inclusion in PitC programmes.
- Ensure compliance with data protection and security requirements.
- Trustee with Responsibility for Safeguarding
Essential:
- Experience or knowledge of safeguarding children, young people, and vulnerable adults.
- Understanding of safeguarding legislation, guidance, and best practices (including The FA Safeguarding framework).
- Ability to provide strategic oversight and guidance on safeguarding matters to the Board.
Desirable:
- Previous experience as a Safeguarding Lead or Officer in a charity, education, or sports organisation.
- Knowledge of safeguarding audits, reporting procedures, and risk management.
Key Duties:
- Lead and champion the Board’s safeguarding agenda.
- Ensure safeguarding policies, procedures, and practices are robust, up-to-date, and consistently applied across all programmes.
- Monitor and advise the charity on safeguarding compliance, including DBS checks, staff/volunteer training, and incident reporting.
- Provide support and guidance to the CEO and senior management team on safeguarding issues.
- Ensure safeguarding considerations are integrated into the charity’s strategic planning and risk management.
- Act as a point of contact for safeguarding concerns raised by staff, volunteers, or participants.
- Report safeguarding matters to the Board in a timely and appropriate manner, maintaining confidentiality as required.

- Enhanced DBS check
- Disclosure of all convictions (spent and unspent) under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (1974) exemption.
