Pompey in the Community (PitC) is an award-winning charity dedicated to transforming lives across Portsmouth and the surrounding area. Harnessing the unique power of football, we deliver programmes in sport, education, health, and inclusion that inspire, engage, and empower thousands of people each year.
Working in close partnership with Portsmouth Football Club and a wide network of stakeholders, PitC plays a vital role in addressing local needs, promoting wellbeing, and building stronger communities.
Role Purpose
The Chair of Trustees provides leadership to the Board, ensuring that Pompey in the Community fulfils its charitable objectives with integrity, accountability, and impact. The Chair will act as a key ambassador for the charity, fostering strong relationships with Portsmouth Football Club, local authorities, partners, funders, and the wider community.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership and Governance
- Lead the Board in setting the strategic direction of the charity and ensuring effective oversight.
- Chair and facilitate productive Board and committee meetings, ensuring inclusive decision-making.
- Ensure that the charity complies with all legal, financial, and regulatory obligations.
- Uphold the highest standards of governance, transparency, and ethical practice.
Support and Challenge
- Provide support, guidance, and constructive challenge to the Chief Executive and senior leadership team.
- Ensure robust risk management and financial sustainability.
- Monitor performance against agreed strategic and operational goals.
Representation and Advocacy
- Act as an ambassador and spokesperson for Pompey in the Community.
- Enhance the charity’s reputation and influence with stakeholders, funders, and the public.
- Represent the charity at key events and engagements, championing its work and impact.
Board Development
- Foster a positive, inclusive, and collaborative Board culture.
- Lead the recruitment, induction, and development of trustees.
- Oversee succession planning to ensure the Board has the skills, diversity, and capacity required.
- Ensure that sub-committee Chairs meet regularly and that all sub-committees effectively fulfil their delegated responsibilities.
Person Specification
Essential
- Significant experience as a Non-Executive Director, Chair, or senior leader in a charity, public, or corporate setting.
- Proven track record of strategic leadership and governance.
- Strong financial literacy with understanding of charity finance, risk, and compliance.
- Excellent communication, influencing, and stakeholder engagement skills.
- Commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion.
- Availability to dedicate a minimum of 4 days per month, with flexibility for evening and weekend commitments.
Desirable
- Passion for football, sport, and community development.
- Knowledge of Portsmouth and the surrounding area, including local challenges and opportunities.
- Experience working with or within professional sports organisations.
