Today, we were thrilled to take our Landsec Futures programme participants on a special behind-the-scenes tour of the iconic Kings Theatre in Southsea. This unique experience gave the group a chance to explore the inner workings of the theatre, chat with staff about their roles, and find out more about the work and volunteer opportunities available.
The Kings Theatre has been a cultural landmark in Portsmouth since 1907, and it was a real privilege for our participants to step beyond the stage and see what happens behind the curtain. From the grand auditorium to the technical control room and dressing rooms, the tour offered a fascinating insight into what it takes to bring a production to life.
A particular highlight was meeting members of the theatre’s team, who were incredibly generous with their time and knowledge. They shared stories about their roles, from working front-of-house to being part of the technical crew, marketing the shows to looking after the staff and executive team, they offered valuable advice about getting started in the theatre industry. It was inspiring for our group to hear about the different pathways into the creative sector and how passion and getting involved can open doors to exciting opportunities.
The Kings Theatre team also shared information about their opportunities, such as ushering during shows or chaperoning backstage. For our Landsec Futures participants, this was a fantastic chance to explore potential paths and consider ways they could gain hands-on experience in a vibrant and creative environment.
It was clear that the visit left a lasting impression, with many participants expressing a newfound interest in working in the arts or getting involved with the theatre through volunteering. Opportunities like this are exactly what the Landsec Futures programme is all about — opening doors, sparking ambition, and helping young people to realise their potential.
Landsec Futures is a £20m fund that aims to deliver around £200m of social value by 2030, supporting at least 30,000 people from underrepresented socio-economic backgrounds towards long-term employment. Pompey in the Community are working with Landsec and Gunwharf Quays to deliver some of this support in Portsmouth.
Our Landsec Futures project is a transformative 12-week programme designed to empower individuals with additional needs to acquire essential life skills and professional development to move into volunteering and employment. We are dedicated to providing opportunities for personal growth and development, equipping participants with the tools they need to succeed in the working world.
A huge thank you to the Kings Theatre for welcoming us and giving our participants such a memorable experience. If you’d like to find out more about the Kings Theatre, you can visit their website at www.kingsportsmouth.co.uk.
