Pompey in the Community: Providing £15 million of social value for the Portsmouth community

At Pompey in the Community (PitC), we’re passionate about making a difference—not just on the pitch but in the heart of Portsmouth and beyond. Social value has always been at the core of what we do, but as businesses face changes to the Procurement Act in February 2025, the need to embrace and deliver meaningful social value is more pressing than ever. Let’s explore why social value matters, what the new changes mean, and how PitC can help businesses achieve their corporate social responsibility goals.

What Is Social Value?

Social value is about creating benefits for communities through activities that go beyond financial gain. You might refer to social value, social impact, corporate social responsibility or CSR, or maybe even ESG or Environmental, Social and Governance. Social Value as defined by the government includes improving public health, creating opportunities for disadvantaged groups, tackling environmental challenges, and building stronger, more cohesive communities. It’s not just the “right thing to do”; it’s increasingly becoming a integral for businesses.

The Procurement Act Changes: What You Need to Know

From February 2025, the UK’s new Procurement Act will require all public contracts to embed measurable social value into their delivery. Social value considerations will account for a minimum percentage of tender evaluations, ensuring that businesses demonstrate a clear impact on communities and the environment. This will increase accountability and provide a competitive edge for businesses committed to positive change.

For businesses bidding on public sector contracts, this highlights the importance of moving towards meaningful and measurable social value initiatives that align with community needs. Embracing these changes will position businesses to make a stronger impact and remain competitive in securing opportunities.

Whether or not you’re bidding for public sector contracts, embracing social value initiatives can drive meaningful change, enhance customer and employee loyalty, and position your business as a force for good.

Case Study: Utilita Energy

Utilita Energy is a valued partner of Pompey in the Community, donating and installing over 358 solar panels on the roof of our John Jenkins Stadium. This will not only help cut our energy costs by more than 60% but we’ll be greener doing so.

Many of our programmes are dedicated to supporting individuals who face significant challenges, and through our partnership with Utilita, we’re proud to champion their inspiring Football Rebooted programme. By donating your old football boots, you’re not only helping the environment but also transforming lives in our local community. This initiative ensures that everyone participating in our projects has access to the right footwear, breaking down barriers and giving everyone the chance to thrive on and off the pitch.

On top of all this, we also collaborate with the Gosport Energy Hub to ensure our local communities have access to support and advice to manage their energy with a friendly face and a hot drink. They offer far more than energy advice, they’re a vital part of the community support network offering activities for children and young people as well as providing vital support for those facing fuel poverty.
